Kobito Dukan: Dwarf Encyclopedia

20100710_1217537

I do sometimes think that god, or Buddha, or whoever is up there was smoking a shitload of crack when he designed Japan. The same thing could be said for Japanese illustrator, Toshitaka Nabata, who is responsible for giving birth to Kobito Dukan – a collection of grotesque boob-like dwarfs that are currently infesting toy shops across the country.

Known in Japanese as kimokawaii, a strange mix of the ugly (kimoi) and cute (kawaii), Kobito Dukan literally means ‘Dwarf Encyclopedia’: 20 nightmarish creations that somehow manage to enchant and repulse at the same time.

There’s a Japanese saying that states “one gets bored of beauty in three days, while one gets used to ugly in three days.” That maybe explains why these hideous, yet adorable, little bastards have stuck around so long.

I kept seeing these obscene buggers when I was in Tokyo recently and knew I had to do some googling about them when I got back. Ridiculous. I need the book!
