IKIMASHO!

Respect the Aged

P1080409
I like old people. They eat fig rolls, wear funny little shoes and complain about things. They also have a good attitude, one that simply states: I’ve lived long enough and hard enough so if I want to scream in public that’s my prerogative. Piss myself? Who are you to judge me.

Japan has the largest percentage of people over 75 in the world. They even have a public holiday – Respect-for-the-Aged Day – to celebrate the fact. Held on the third Monday in September, it meant I just had a long weekend to enjoy, um… not being old. I drank Vietnamese beer with a Scot and an American, ate Thai food with with an Australian and a Canadian and watched as China got severely pissed with Japan over a group of islands in the East China Sea. It was a pretty international weekend – even if there weren’t many old people about.

My papa always loved Sinatra. So I guess this is what I want to think when it’s my turn to get old:

I’ve lived a life that’s full, I travelled each and every highway.
And more, much more than this. I did it my way.

After a solid two-month run, the Nara Yoshitomo exhibition was pleasantly quiet. <love>

Never too early to become obsessed with Dali…

I had no idea one of my favourite paintings – The Museum of the King by Rene Magritte – was at home in Yokohama. Every time I look at it I think about the people inside the house looking out at me.

Landmark Tower, Yokohama. I love Yokohama, I could move here.

Jake and I found a billiard hall that looked like it had been untouched from the 70s. We drank Scotch while I completed a piss-poor 7-3 defeat. Revenge…

I took a walk around Golden Gai in Shinjuku one rainy afternoon. By night, these six alleyways come alive with over 200 shanty-style bars. Most can only fit about five people max.

Some big electronica events over the next few months: Clark, Squarepusher, Flying Lotus all involved.

Haha, fair enough! It’s called Scotch over here though so just getting in character ;pI’m trying to pretend that I’m all grown up by drinking hard liquor out of a tumbler.
