Drum solos, Kamen Rider & Oprah peeing. Inside the brain of Venetian Snares.
With Red Bull Music Academy coming to Tokyo this year I thought it would be fun to showcase some of my favourite electronic musicians right here on Ikimasho! – producers who are set to come to Japan, or who have played here in the past. The format is simple: each artist sends me 10 YouTube links about the stuff they love, be it music, inspirations, whatever…
First up, a man who needs no introduction: Aaron Funk, better known as Venetian Snares. I took the time to get inside the brain of the breakcore big-man ahead of his forthcoming slot at Taico Club this year. The result is an intriguing mish-mash of of drumming videos, Oprah peeing for ten minutes and his unashamed love for Kamen Rider Amazon. Enjoy.
1. Catherine Breillat’s ‘Romance’
” I haven’t seen this yet, but I have been fascinated with the films of her’s I’ve seen and really want to see this one next.”
2. Doritos SWF!
“AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! OK this has been the best thing in the world during many periods of my life!”
3. Kamen Rider Amazon!
“Amazon is my favorite Kamen Rider! I made a song about him once. Sometimes V3 is my favorite Kamen Rider but usually it is Amazon. Sometimes Stronger too. I love Kamen Riders!”
4. Jessica Kenney and Eyvind Kang
“Just saw these two tonight, so good, voice, viola and pedals, mesmorizing! Beautiful.”
5. Majical Cloudz
“Saw this band a few times last year, they are onto something real, something honest. Their shows are an intensely moving experience. Love this music.”
6. Joe Morello 1961 Drum Solo!
“Joe Morello is a huge inspiration for me. Incredible how he builds this up with his hands changing to sticks, rocking the fives. Legend.”
7. Mike Glozier – Frictional Nevada live drums
“Speaking of incredible drummers, here’s my friend Mike Glozier playing my tune blindfolded! This guy is one with drums.”
8. Oprah pees for ten minutes
“I don’t know why I like this so much but I do. I’m immature.”
9. Man Spaghetti!
” I once visited the Colosseum in Rome. I once read Prison Pit. I once watched TV at the bottom of a bath tub.”
10. Winnepeg is a Frozen Shithole
“So this happened last year on my birthday. Coincidentally there was a huge storm the day I was born. I like to imagine this fellow narrating my birth.”
Venetian Snares plays Taico Club in Nagano Prefecture on 31 May alongside Mount Kimbie, Tim Hecker, The Black Dog and others.
