Staying above water. The Voidic Charm of Ultrademon – and the evolution of Seapunk.
After a debut release on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex Records, Kansas-born Chicago-based producer Ultrademon is back – releasing second album ‘Voidic Charms’ on his own Coral Records Internazionale imprint. While the first release was essentially a definition of the Seapunk genre that he himself created, Voidic Charms goes beyond that, offering a neon concoction of wonky synths, low-fi electronics, acid, grime, hard house and video game samples.
Seapunk may have been what made Ultrademon famous in the first place – but it’s his talent as a producer that has seen him survive, while so many others have drowned. I asked Ultrademon what he thinks of Japan – and to pick a bunch of YouTube videos for Ikimasho! The result is a surreal mix of veganism, rap, and a woman who eats 50 bananas a day. Check out his answers and video picks below.
You played Japan last year but I was in Indonesia so couldn’t go! How was it?
It was rad, a super supportive audience that actually listened to the music I was playing for what it was, rather than the more american “prove yourself” etc etc. Getting to meet the Maltine crowd IRL and touring with Seiho was great.
What do you think of the fashion in Tokyo?
I really enjoy it, and feel like I have been apart of shaping it’s future (via the whole seapunk thing), I think now they are calling it Neo-Gal for the ladies over there though. It’s pretty weird how typically bro dudes in Japan will be wearing super underground style crushing clothes.
Does Japan ever influence your music?
So this album definitely has a lot of influences that come from Japan I’m sure. Very island esque this time around. I grew up in Kansas City which is relatively isolated from the main cultural havens in this country. So in a way it’s like an island. I really enjoyed my time in Japan and would like to return, this time around it should be easier finding vegan food haha. I guess touring isn’t the same as actually traveling, being able to spend say a month or more in a place, rather than a few jet lagged nights.
