Bass master Synkro steps up and makes his selection for Ikimasho!
Synkro AKA Joe McBride returns to R&S offshoot Apollo Records this month with the new four-track Transient EP. With its distant vocals and sweeping synths it’s reminiscent of the incredible track Guidance he made with Indigo back in 2011: layered, tightly produced and ultra-spacious. Recently, of course, Synkro has been busy working as one half of Akkord – also alongside Indigo – which resulted in a stunning self-titled album on Houndstooth last year. Akkord are making serious waves in the electronic music scene at the minute, but despite all this it’s good to see that Synkro’s solo work continues – and is as good as ever.
I asked Joe to pick ten YouTube videos that showcase some of the stuff he’s into. You can check out his picks – as well as listen to the title track off his new EP – below.
“I wrote the EP in between moving house, I started the tracks in my old flat & finished them in my new house. After living & spending a lot of time in Manchester I decided that it wasn’t for me, I moved back to a small town in Derbyshire where I grew up & this EP kind of reflects my journey.”
IKIMASHO! YOUTUBE SESSIONS: SYNKRO
Ryoichi Kurokawa – Oscillating Continuum
“All of Ryoichi Kurokawa’s work is pretty special, but this one really stands out for me.”
Alva Noto – Uni Acronym (ft. Anne-James Chaton)
“I’m a massive fan of Carsten Nicolai, but this really is a personal favourite – everything he does is amazing though.”
‘Infinity’ CITIZEN x WOW (Daihei Shibata)
“I found Daihei Shibata through a video he did for a group called :Papercutz. This one is a bit random, i think it’s a commercial, but its still mind blowing.”
Brian Eno – An Ending (Ascent)
“One of my absolute favourite ambient pieces of all time, found it on vinyl in a local record shop a few years ago for a bargain price – one of my best purchases.”
Chuck Persons A.D.D. Complete (All Albums)
“Crazy collection of locked grooves from Daniel Lopatin under his Chuck Persons alias. i love how you can hear so many elements from ‘Replica’ in their raw form.”
La Planète Sauvage 1 (El Planeta Salvaje René Laloux)
“Seriously trippy animation from 1973 by René Laloux, would heavily advise checking all of his work if you’re into this.”
μ-ziq – Fall Of Antioch
“I love this piece, one of my favourites from Mike Paradinas.”
Oneohtrix Point Never – Problem Areas
“Love the video for this, fits in perfectly with OPN’s recent work.”
Squarepusher – Come On My Selector (Chris Cunningham)
“I love pretty much everything Chris Cunningham has done, this one always makes me laugh though.”
Tool – Parabola
“I used to listen to Tool all day, everyday on my cassette walkman throughout high school. It’s a bit dated but i still find myself going back to them now.”
Synkro’s Transient EP is out on Apollo on 25 November.
