I’m just home after what was a pretty exhausting/eventful/downright bizarre day at work. Usually my commute is a few simple stops on the Keio line and totals about 15 minutes. Today, however, I had to travel down to Shizuoka via shinkansen to help out at a school there. Up early, I caught a bullet train from Shinagawa and 122km later was dumped in a city in the foothills of Mount Fuji. My day included practicing taiko drumming with the kids on top of a hill overlooking the city. With misty mountains all around me and the sea of the Izu peninsula in the distance, it was quite a surreal setting. Later on back at school, things weren’t any less surreal. A communal dining hall meant that lunch resembled a scene from Shawshank Redemption, albeit replaced with screaming toddlers. Oh, and did I mention the school bus shaped like a dog that drives the kids about? Like I said, bizarre day.
