Two days of gloriously doing nothing by the East Vietnam Sea / 南シナ海での贅沢な二日間

With just six days in Vietnam on this most recent trip, we wanted to make the most of our time there and enjoy what could be described as three mini-breaks in themselves: two days in bustling Ho Chi Minh City; two days relaxing by the beach in Danang; and two days exploring the old cobbled streets of Hoi An.

ベトナムでの六日間の旅を満喫するために訪問先を、賑やかなホーチミン市、のんびり過ごしたダナンの海岸、そして、歴史あふれるホイアンの町の三ケ所に絞り、それぞれの場所で2日間過ごしました。

Due to time constraints, a lengthy bus ride was out of the question between Saigon and Danang, and so we chose Vietnam Airlines – a short one-hour flight that landed us in Danang around lunchtime. (I have to say here as a side note that we also flew Vietnam Airlines from Tokyo to HCMC and it was one of the most relaxing journeys in economy I’ve had in recent years. By reducing the middle row to three seats instead of four, the cabin felt so much roomier.)

時間が限られていたことと、サイゴン – ダナン間の長距離バス移動は問題外だったので, 1時間で行けるベトナム航空を選び、ちょうどお昼頃にダナンに到着しました。(余談ですが、ベトナム航空による成田 – ホーチミンの旅は今まで経験したエコノミークラスの旅で一番快適なものでした。通常4列の中央部が3列で、とても広く感じ十分くつろげました。)

Arrival in Danang / ダナン到着

So what were our first impressions of Danang? Simple. Where is everybody?! Two hours earlier we were stuck in traffic in Ho Chi Minh City, and yet here in Danang the roads were wider and the mopeds nearly non-existent. Our stay was to be two nights in a LEVEL Villa at Melia Danang, a four-star resort overlooking the East Vietnam Sea. And by resort, I mean it in the purest sense of the word. Once we entered Melia’s gates, we didn’t leave for two days.

ダナンの第一印象は「人はどこにいるのだろう?」といった感じでした。2時間前にいた賑やかなホーチミンとは打って変わって広めの道路にはバイクはほとんど見られず、二つの町の違いに不思議な感じを受けました。ダナンにいる間はMelia Danangにある、南シナ海を見降ろせる四つ星のリゾートホテル Level Villaに宿泊しました。正しくリゾートという言葉にふさわしい所で、ホテルの門をくぐった後2日間一歩もホテルから出ませんでした。

What is a LEVEL Villa? / LEVEL Villaについて

Just one minute on foot from Non Nuoc Beach, THE LEVEL Villas are the highest room category in the resort and it is clear to see why. After our welcome drink and check-in, a buggy brought us round to our villa which was beautifully designed from the outside, and equally spacious within. A bowl of tropical fruit was waiting for us, and an outdoor rain shower (with toiletries from Molton Brown I may add), signaled that we were well and truly away from the hustle and bustle of Saigon.

ノンヌオックビーチから徒歩1分の所にあるThe LEVEL Villasはそのリゾート地の中で最高級のヴィラで、一目見ればはっきり分かります。チェックイン後にバギー(馬車)でヴィラまで案内されました。外側は美しく設計され、室内もとても広々としていてお洒落なインテリアで沢山のトロピカルフルーツがテーブルに置いてありました。シャワーは外のプライベートシャワー(レインシャワー)で、バスアメニティは有名ブランドの Molton Brownでした。

Food, glorious food / 豪華な食事

Checking in to a resort can often be a risky affair, putting you at the mercy of overpriced hotel restaurants. Thankfully, that was not the case here. Full breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails were all included, with us choosing to eat outside at the same table on the terrace each day.

リゾートに宿泊する懸念材料としてはホテルのレストランで食事をする費用ですが、今回そのような心配は全くありませんでした。朝食、アフタヌーンティー、イーブニングカクテルが全て含まれており、毎日、外のテラスにある同じテーブルで食事することもできました。

As you would expect of a hotel of this grade, the options were plentiful and the quality on point. For breakfast we drank fresh fruit juices and loaded up on salads, while afternoon tea offered us an abundance of canapés, cakes and other delights. One night we ate Korean BBQ on the terrace: all you can eat seafood, meat and vegetables for $20US.

このクラスの豪華リゾートに期待すべく、食事のオプションも多く、質も格別でした。毎朝、フレッシュジュースや様々なサラダを楽しめ、アフタヌーンティーではふんだんに味わえるカナッペ、種々のケーキ又は他のデザートが出されました。ある夜は米$20で海産物、お肉、野菜すべて食べ放題のKorean BBQをテラスで楽しめました。

That. View. / 美しい景色

The sunrises at Melia Danang are unrivaled. Each morning at 5.30am we walked down to the beach and bathed in the soft colours and clear waters. I have never seen a nicer, quieter, sunrise in Asia. The resort’s private beach means you pretty much have the view to yourself, and what a view it is. Now, as I sit here in Tokyo writing this post and looking at the photos I can only say, “take me back!”

で見た日の出は今まで見たことのないような美しい光景でした。毎朝5時半に砂浜まで歩いて行き、美しく、透き通った水につかったりしました。あれほどまでに静かで素敵な日の出をアジアで見たことがありません。プライベートビーチ付きリゾートとはそこの眺めが自分たちだけのものだということです。東京に戻りDanangで過ごした2日間を振り返りながら写真を見ていると「戻りたいな!」という気持ちでいっぱいです。
