Exploring the city via two ambient properties: Kikoku no Mori & Gion Furumonzen

With a trip already planned to Europe at the end of April, finances kept us in Japan over the winter break – lazing about at home and walking about our local neighbourhood. We did, however, take advantage of the time off by heading down to Kyoto for a few days just before Christmas.
4月下旬にヨーロッパへいく予定もあることから、冬休みは日本で過ごすことにしました。年末 年始はのんびりと家で過ごし、近所を散歩することにしましたが、休みを利用してクリスマス前 に数日間京都に行くことができました。
It had been ten years since I was last in the city, and over 15 for Miss IKIMASHO, and so we were in full-on newbie mode – exploring Kyoto as if it was our first time. Eating our way around the city, we had two bases during our stay with the boutique brand, Hotel Ethnography.
私が最後に京都を訪れたのは10年前で、Miss Ikimashoにとっては15年ぶりだったため、全く初 めて訪れるような新鮮な気持ちでした。京都で食べ歩く際、滞在の拠点としたのは、2カ所のホテルを持つブテイック・ホテル「ホテル・ エスノグラフィー」でした。
Armed with bentos, coffee and tea, we boarded our Shinkansen to Kyoto at 9am and were already walking about Kyoto station just after 11am. Shinkansen travel within Japan for those who live here is an expensive treat: we aren’t allowed to buy JR passes like visitors from abroad. But it is hands-down the best way to travel between Tokyo and Kyoto.
弁当、コーヒー、お茶をしっかり用意して、午前9時発の京都行きの新幹線に乗り、11時過ぎ にはもう京都駅をブラブラと歩いていました。海外からの観光客とは違い、JRパスを買うことが 許されていない日本在住の人にとっては、新幹線での国内旅行は高くつきます。しかし、間違いな く、東京、京都間の旅行には新幹線が最善の方法です。

Hotel Ethnography: Kikoku no Mori
Despite being four hours early for check in, Hotel Ethnography said our room was ready and we could come any time we liked. This allowed us to make the short walk from Kyoto station, dump our (admittedly small) bags, and then head off for a lunch reservation elsewhere in the city.
ホテル・エスノグラフィー「枳殼の杜」(きこくのもり)チェック・インまで、まだ4時間あったにも関わらず、部屋が既に用意できているので、いつでも 来て良いとのことでした。おかげで、京都駅からちょっと歩くだけで、荷物を置いて手ぶらで、昼 食を予約していたレストランに向かうことができました。

Our first impressions of Hotel Ethnography Kikoku no Mori were very good. Sleek washi screen doors across the windows, as well as the room’s clean interior design, reflected the hotel’s four-star status. High-end imabari towels (which retail at $50 a pop), and a full set of organic bathroom amenities, meant we were able to keep our own bags light.
ホテル・エスノグラフィー「枳殼の杜」(きこくのもり)の私達の第一印象はとても良いものでし た。明かりを通す光沢のある和紙の障子とシックなインテリアがお洒落に表現されていて、さす が四つ星ホテルの風格でした。洗面所には一枚五千円はする高級今治タオルとオーガニック アメ ニティーが用意されてあり、身軽に旅行ができるように配慮されていました。
Hotel Ethnography Kikoku no Mori. All rooms and spaces have been designed by famous Kyoto artists specialising in hyogu, the traditional Japanese craft of mounting pieces of calligraphy, paintings, or other works of art onto scrolls, frames, or folding screens.

Hotel Ethnography: Gion Furumonzen
Living in Tokyo means that other cities always seem small in comparison. Kyoto was no exception, with us able to walk between many of the key areas, only using the subway when we needed to. Unlike Hotel Ethnography Kikoku no Mori which was close to Kyoto station, the brand’s Gion Furumonzen property was in Gion, a district famous for its wooden shopfronts and geisha.
ホテル・エスノグラフィー 祇園古門前(ぎおん ふるもんぜん)大都市東京に住んでいると他の都市は全て比較的小さく思えます。京都も例外にもれず、必要な時 を除いてはほとんど地下鉄を使わずにあちこち歩きながら観光地を見て回ることができました。 京都駅近くにあったホテル エスノグラフィー「枳殼の杜」(きこくのもり)とは違い同系列の祇園 古門前は伝統的なお店や芸者で有名な祇園に位置しています。
Exploring the backstreets of Gion
Maintaining the same modern ambience as the our first base, Gion Furumonzen was set in a quiet residential area just ten minutes away from a subway station, and 15 minutes from Yasaka Pagoda which we were easily able to walk to for sunrise.
ホテル・エスノグラフィー「枳殼の杜」(きこくのもり)と同様、モダンな雰囲気をかもしだして いる祇園古門前は、最寄りの地下鉄駅から10分、八坂神社から15分という閑静な住宅街に位置し ています。それで朝早く散歩して八坂神社で日の出を見ることができました。

The room interior featured soft lighting, and a painting in the hall that I really liked. In fact, the design of this property had a modern elegance that we saw time and time again right across Kyoto. This is a city that prides itself on minimalist perfection, from its intimate temples and gardens, to immaculately presented food.
室内はもの柔らかな照明になっていて、廊下に飾ってあった絵がとても気に入りました。実際、 この建物には京都中で何度も見かけたモダンでエレガントな雰囲気があります。京都は余計なものを省いたミニマリズムを極めることに誇りを持っている所です。それは京都中に見られる神社 や庭園、そして完璧なまでに表現された料理にも見られます。
Hotel Ethnography Gion Furumonzen
Speaking of food, breakfast at both hotels was very interesting and impressive. Hotel Ethnography chooses to outsource its breakfasts to a high-end bento company that delivers them fresh to its hotels every day. This cuts out on the need for the hotels to have a kitchen, and allows for the menu to change daily. I had never heard of this process before but it made perfect sense, especially when smaller boutique hotels simply do not have the space. The vegetarian breakfast on both days was excellent.
食べ物について言えば、これらの二つのホテルの朝食は非常に興味深く、また素晴らしいもので した。ホテル・エスノグラフィーは、提携している高級弁当会社から毎朝作りたての弁当を取り寄 せています。これにより、ホテルとしても台所を持つ必要はなく、毎日違うメニューを選ぶことが 可能になります。このようなシステムは聞いたことがありませんでしたがとても効率的で良いシス テムだと思いました。特にスペースが限られている小規模なブテイック ホテルにはそうだと思い ます。滞在した二日間のベジテリアン朝食には非常に満足しました。

Wow the hotel looks really elegant. I’ve never heard of a hotel ordering bento too, though as you said – it makes sense.
