Becoming one of the locals through a luxury hotel experience・高級ホテルでの経験を通じて地元の一員となる機会
With the cold winter days behind us, we made our way up to Tochigi prefecture to enjoy the first few days of spring. Despite it being a relatively short journey from Tokyo (45 minutes on the Shinkansen will take you to Utsunomiya, a good stopover point for onward local trains) it was our first time to visit the region. Our destination was Nakagawa-machi, a small town in northeast Tochigi with a population of roughly 16,000 people.
寒い冬も過ぎ、暖かい春の陽気を楽しむため、私たちは栃木県で何日間か過ごしました。東京から比較的短時間で行ける所ですが、この地域を訪れるのは初めてでした。(新幹線で行くと45分で宇都宮駅に着きます。宇都宮は地元電車への乗り継ぎ地点として最適な駅です。) 私たちの目的地は栃木県北東部に位置する、人口約16,000人の小さな町、那珂川町でした。
For a few simple days, we lived our best inaka (countryside) lives; visiting local shopkeepers, cycling on empty roads and discovering hidden shrines. It was a perfect escape, made even better by our base – Iizuka-tei – a historic Japanese house that has been painstakingly renovated into a luxury ryokan.
地元の店を見て回ったり、誰もいない道をサイクリングしたり、人目につかないような所にある神社を発見したりして、ほんの数日間でしたが、素晴らしい田舎生活を楽しむことができました。ごちゃごちゃした東京から離れ、静かな町を楽しむのに最適でした。この滞在をさらに素敵なものにしたのは、私たちが泊まった飯塚邸でした。これは歴史のある古民家を丹念に改築した高級な旅館です。

Our trip to nostalgic Nakagawa-machi ・懐かしさが溢れる那珂川町への旅
Iizuka-tei is unlike any hotel I have stayed in before. But to fully explain what I mean, I feel I need to set the scene a little regarding Nakagawa-machi itself. A 45-minute bus ride from the nearest train station, your journey will see you pass by rice fields, rural farm stays and the odd obaasan (elderly lady) picking fruit in her garden. There are few cars, and even fewer traffic signals.
飯塚邸滞在は、今まで泊まったどのホテルとも全く異なる経験でした。十分に説明するためには、那珂川町がどの様な町なのかを少し説明する必要があります。最寄りの駅から45分のバス旅で目にするものは、ずーっと広がる田んぼや田舎の農家のたたずまい、そしてお庭で果物を摘んでいるおばあちゃんなどです。車もほとんど走っておらず、信号機もあまり無いのです。
After driving through the countryside, the town itself seemingly appears out of nowhere – a 1km shopping street situated in the middle of nowhere. It feels hidden and magical, as if it has been plucked straight out a Ghibli movie. The town is old, and some shops are shuttered. But it has the feeling of gentle nostalgia as opposed to being run-down. This is Nakagawa-machi.
田園風景を通りずぎると、知らないうちに那珂川町に到着しました。周りに何もない所に、長さ約1kmの商店街があります。ジブリ映画からそのまま出てきたような不思議で素敵な光景です。町自体は古くて、シャッターがおろされているお店もありました。それでも、荒れ果てているというより、昔の懐かしさを感じさせる町でした。

Iizuka-tei: the heart of the town・町の中心にある飯塚邸
As is the case with many small towns in Japan and around the world, when younger generations come of age they often leave the area, which causes a natural shrink to the population. Nakagawa-machi is a quiet town, with shopkeepers basically trading to the small number of people who live there. This is where Iizuka-tei steps in: going beyond its role as merely a hotel, and becoming a major supporter of the neighbourhood.
日本や世界中の多くの小さな町に見られるように、若い世代が成人すると地元を去り、その結果、町の人口が減少してしまいます。那珂川町はとても静かな町で、商店にとっては基本的に、そこに住んでいる少数の人々がお客さんです。ここで、飯塚邸が大きく関わってきます。ホテルとしての役割を超えて、近隣のビジネスの主要なサポーターになっているのです。

Most of the hotel’s produce and amenities are directly sourced from the shops that surround it. When we checked in, we found a lovely fruit and vegetable platter left in the refrigerator for us. Beside it, a little note telling us the name of each shop each specific ingredient had come from. Strawberries…tomatoes… miso paste, all bought from separate vendors in the area, not just from the supermarket. One local restaurant has even been given the major contract to make up the elaborate breakfasts for the hotel.
飯塚邸が提供している農産物またはアメニティのほとんどは、ホテル周辺のお店から直接調達されています。チェックインした際に、色鮮やかで素敵な果物と野菜の盛り合わせプレートが冷蔵庫に置いてありました。苺やトマトや味噌のディップは全てスーパーで購入されたのではなく、それぞれ地元のお店から購入したものだったのです。ある地元のレストランは飯塚邸と特別の契約を結び、飯塚邸宿泊客用の豪華な朝食を提供しています。

The hotel itself ・ホテル自体
When it comes to defining Iizuka-tei, it can’t really be described as a hotel, or even a ryokan in the traditional sense. Think of it more as a huge and historic Japanese family home that has been divided up into a number of elegant living spaces. Minimalist and modern, the designers have taken care to preserve and draw inspiration from the house’s original aesthetic.
Our room – Shintaku B – flowed beautifully with separate living, dining and bedroom spaces. The best way to visualise it is to watch the short video below. Both breakfast and dinner were served in our room, and as you can see from the presentation, it matched the quality of the room itself. Wild boar and onsen torafugu (pufferfish raised in onsen water to remove its poison) were just two of the specialities on offer.
飯塚邸がどんな宿か説明するとしたら、それはホテルとは言えませんし、また伝統的な旅館とも言えません。むしろ、歴史ある日本の大邸宅が幾つものエレガントなお部屋に分割されている状態を想像してみて下さい。各部屋は、デザイナーがその家のもともとの美しさからインスピレーションを得てミニマリストでモダンなデザインにしてあります。
私たちが泊まった部屋「新宅B」は、リンビングルーム、ダイニングルームから寝室まで丁寧に美しくデザインされていました。以下の動画をご覧になればどのようになっているかおわかり頂けると思います。朝食と夕食はどちらも部屋に配膳され、部屋の雰囲気にマッチしていてお洒落で豪華でした。イノシシ肉や、毒を取り除くために温泉水で育てたとらふぐなど様々な料理を楽しめました。

Service and Experiences ・サービスと経験
From the moment we were met at the bus stop directly outside Iizuka-tei, we were taken care of. Our point of contact was Natalie, the concierge at the hotel. Friendly and professional, she lives and breathes Nakagawa-machi and her enthusiasm for the town is infectious. As well as explaining all about the hotel, she provided electric bikes that we could use to get around, and arranged for us to visit a local pottery workshop where we got to make our own creations. I also really enjoyed simply wandering around the sleepy town, taking photos of all the retro shopfronts.
飯塚邸の目の前にあるバス停に到着した瞬間から、飯塚邸のおもてなしが始まりました。飯塚邸との連絡はナタリーというコンシェルジュと行っておりました。那珂川町に住んでいるナタリーはとてもフレンドリーでプロフェッショナルであり、彼女の町に対する情熱がひしひしと伝わってきます。飯塚邸についての詳しい説明はもとより、町を回れるように電動自転車を貸してくれたり、地元の陶芸教室にも参加できるよう手配をしてくれました。特に私にとって楽しかったことは、静かな町の周りを散歩しながらレトロな店先の写真を撮ったりすることでした。

Living in Tokyo for so many years, it’s easy to forget how simple life can be when surrounded by quiet tranquility. For the residents of Nakagawa-machi, this is daily life. For us, it was an adventure to the countryside – seeing a side of Japan that is rarely promoted in guidebooks or TV. I am happy knowing that if I ever need to get away from it all, Nakagawa-machi and Iizuka-tei are waiting to welcome me once again. For now, I will dream of those little shopfronts.
東京に長年住んでいると、知らないうちに静かで落ち着いた空間に囲まれた生活はどれだけシンプルか忘れてしまいます。ですが、那珂川町の住人にとってはこれは当たり前のことです。私たちは、普段テレビや観光用のガイドブックに滅多に放送されない田舎で素敵なひと時を経験できました。都会から離れたい気分になった場合、いつでも那珂川町と飯塚邸に行けると思うと嬉しく思います。次回、 遊びに行けるまでは絵になる那珂川町の店舗を考え続けます。
