Fine Dining in Tokyo: The Rooftop Bar at Andaz Tokyo

For the past few years, my main interest in Tokyo has been wandering around the smaller, unknown neighbourhoods of the city. At ground level, each of these discreet little areas can seem very quiet and simple – but when thousands of them join together, they transform into a patchwork quilt of neon that is best viewed from above. Only then can you really appreciate how vast and bewitching this city really is.

In the mood to savour such a view, Mrs IKIMASHO and I reserved a spot at the atmospheric Rooftop Bar at Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills a few weeks back. We had actually been to Andaz Tokyo before – eating at Andaz Tavern (which has since been revitalised as The Tavern – Grill & Lounge) three years ago – but this was to be our first time taking the elevator up to the top 52nd floor. Seated in front of huge floor-to-ceiling windows, we were able to indulge in a few hours of simply doing nothing: watching the world from above, and enjoying some nice food and drink.

In order to maximize the view outside and avoid reflections in the window, the bar itself is dimly lit. It certainly added to the atmosphere, but also made it a bit tricky to get good photos of the food we ate – so sorry if the pictures don’t do it justice. Despite being labelled as ‘snacks’, the food on offer was luxurious and complemented the setting perfectly.

Working our way through some different dishes and a few mocktails, it felt like a proper Saturday night in Tokyo – with us feeling like tourists in our own city, gazing down at the twinkling lights below. If you want to follow in our footsteps and treat yourself next time you are in Japan, add it to your Tokyo itinerary.
