Relax, Refresh & Recharge in the Mountains of Hakone / 箱根の山奥でリラックス、リフレッシュ、リチャージ

With international travel on hold for the foreseeable future, Mrs IKIMASHO and I have been staying close to home – enjoying our usual rambles around local neighbourhoods, as well as some short day trips to neighboring Kanagawa prefecture. We admittedly do miss the feeling of ‘proper travel’, however, and so every few months we venture slightly further afield to spend the night somewhere. Back in April we spent some time in Tochigi, while this December we plan to head down to Fukuoka and Saga.

新型コロナウイルス感染の蔓延により厳しい状況が続く中、海外旅行が当分の間は保留となったため、私とMrs. IKIMASHOは休日の時間は自宅でゆっくり時間を過ごしたり、近辺の住宅街を散歩したり、日帰りで神奈川県へ行ったりして過ごしてきました。しかし旅行が恋しくなるため、数ヶ月ごとに少し離れた場所へ一泊二日のプチ旅行をしています。4月には、栃木県に行く機会があり、年末には福岡県と佐賀県に行く予定をしております。

Our latest overnight adventure was, however, just a few weeks back – a much needed getaway to the mountains of Hakone to stay at the wonderful Hotel Indigo Hakone Gora. Work has been pretty intense for the both of us over the last few months, and so this break came just at the right time. Usually when we travel we end up exploring a fair bit, but this time we told ourselves we would simply get some rest, enjoy the hotel and recuperate. And that’s exactly what we did – a feat made easy due to how good the hotel really was.

ごく最近行ってきた一泊旅行は数週間前でしたが、宿泊先は箱根の大自然に囲まれた「ホテルインディゴ箱根強羅」でした。お互いにこの数ヶ月間というもの、仕事で結構忙しかったため、今回のプチ旅行はちょうど良いタイミングでした。いつもは旅行する度、目的地を結構散策する私たちですが、今回は久しぶりにゆっくり過ごして、ホテルでの時間を楽しむことにしました。ホテルがとても素晴らしかったため満喫することができました。

As we left our house in Tokyo, a typhoon was hammering down. Once we arrived in Odawara, however, we stepped outside the station and immediately thought to ourselves, “Where has all the rain gone?” Evidently the storm front had passed by Kanagawa. The complimentary shuttle bus was waiting for us, and we were soon zig-zagging our way up the mountains on our way to the hotel.

東京のアパートを出た頃はちょうど台風が襲ってくるとこでしたが、小田原駅に到着した時には台風の気配が全くなく、雨もほとんど降っていませんでした。嵐の前線が神奈川県を通過していたのです。駅の近くで待機していた送迎用のシャトルバスに乗り、くねくねした道を通って山奥にあるホテルへ向かいました。

Check-in was fast and hassle-free – sitting in the lounge with a welcome drink – and also gave us our first chance to check out the decor. Geometric patterns everywhere, the design was clean and modern, yet filled with the type of nostalgia you’d expect from a Wes Anderson movie. Each Hotel Indigo takes its inspiration from the neighbourhood that it calls home. We learned that these geometric patterns are actually called yosegi-zaiku and symbolic of the region. Artisans would bind wood from different types of trees then create colourful mosaics to adorn a whole host of objects. These designs are absolutely everywhere within the hotel, and created a nice overall theme to the property.

チェックインは簡潔で、ラウンジで旅の疲れを癒す飲み物をいただきながらホテルの館内をゆっくりと見ることもできました。いたる所に幾何学模様が施してあり、デザインは端正でモダンでありながら、Wes Andersonの映画を思わせるような郷愁を漂わせていました。各ホテル インデイゴは置かれているその近隣の雰囲気をうまく取り入れています。その幾何学模様が「寄せ木細工」と呼ばれるもので、この地方独特のものであることを学びました。工芸家が異なった種類の木々を束ねてカラフルなモザイクを創り、それでもって様々なものを飾るのです。このような数々のデザインがホテル内のあちこちにあり、一つの素晴らしいテーマをかもし出しています。

The design of the room was equally as impressive. Lots of straight lines, and interesting textures. As soon as we stepped inside the room, the stresses of the past working week disappeared. We had our own private onsen bath overlooking the river, and the steady sound of the water below was hypnotic and relaxing in equal measures. We ordered room service, relaxed and watched the huge flatscreen TV, and took baths filled with refreshing lemons bobbing up and down.

多くの直線とユニークな質感の内装をあしらった部屋のデザインは同様に印象的でした。室内に入るや否や、仕事のストレスが吹っ飛んだような気がしました。川を一望できるプライベートな温泉があり、絶え間なく聞こえるせせらぎは眠りを誘うと共に、リラックスさせるものでもありました。ルームサービスをお願いし、大画面のテレビを見、さわやかなレモンが浮き沈みするお風呂に入ってリラックスすることができました。

Leaving the screen door slightly ajar at night meant we could fall asleep to the sound of the river below. I woke up early, wanting to sit in the bath and watch the sun come up. Quiet moments like this are what made me really appreciate this hotel. After working out in the gym, we headed down for breakfast and were treated to not only menu choices, but also a buffet of various fruits, yogurts and pastries. The calm ambience and abundance of sunlight – combined with good coffee and food – started our day off right.

網戸を少し開けたまま、下を流れる川のせせらぎを聴きながら心地よく眠ることができました。翌朝は、露天風呂につかりながら日の出を見たくて朝早く起きました。このように静かでゆったりとしたひと時を過ごせることがこのホテルの素晴らしいところです。フィットネスセンターで運動した後、私たちは朝食を食べに一階に向かいました。朝食ではメインメニューから一品を選ぶ他、ビュッフェには果物、ヨーグルト、パンなど様々な食べ物がありました。お美味しい朝食やコーヒーをいただきながら味わえる、穏やかな雰囲気と溢れるばかりの日差しは素敵な一日の始まりでした。

IKIMASHO!

Before checking out and heading back to Tokyo, we wandered about the surrounding area for a few hours, walking along the river, and exploring small suburban streets at the base of the mountains. The pace of life is slow here, and therein lies its appeal. We discovered a small Chinese restaurant and were served the biggest plate of kata yakisoba we had ever seen in our life. We then jumped back on the shuttle bus and headed back to the station, refreshed and ready to return to Tokyo. We were sad to leave the mountains behind, but happy in the knowledge that this area and hotel is just an hour or so away when we next need a recharge. See you again, Hakone.

チェックアウトをして東京に向かう前に、川のほとりを歩いたり、山の麓にある小さな街並みを散歩したりしてその近郊を2〜３時間散策しました。ここの生活のペースはゆったりとしていて、それ自体が大きな魅力です。見つけて入った小さな中華料理店では、今までに見たことがないような大きな皿いっぱいのかた焼きそばが出てきました。すっかりリフレッシュされ、東京に戻る用意もでき、シャトルバスに乗って駅まで行きました。山々をあとにして去るのは寂しい気持ちがしましたが、また都会生活の疲れからリチャージする必要がある時には、この地域やホテルが一時間かそこらで来れる場所だと思ったら嬉しい気持ちになりました。また箱根に行くのを楽しみにしています。
