Deep within a forest valley, our own private sanctuary / 緑豊かな渓谷にある私たちだけの個人的なやすらいの場所
In over twenty years of travel, there have been a number of moments that have really stayed with me. From the sun rising over Mount Bromo in East Java, to it setting over the Temples of Bagan in Myanmar, these lasting memories are what make travel so worthwhile. I feel lucky that I was able to create another one of these memories recently – standing with my wife gazing out over the serene tropical landscape at Viceroy Bali in Ubud.
20年以上の旅において、私に深い印象を与えた瞬間がいくつかあります。東ジャワ州にあるブロモ山越しの日の出から、ミャンマーにあるバガン遺跡に沈む夕日など、一生忘れられない思い出こそが正に旅をする素晴らしさを感じさせるものです。今回、バリ島へ旅行した時に幸いにも、また一つ大切な思い出を作ることができました。ウブド郡にあるヴァイスロイ・バリで穏やかな熱帯風景を妻と共に眺めた時にです。
The epic tropical landscape view from Viceroy Bali
It’s wrong to simply call Viceroy Bali a hotel. The term resort doesn’t do it justice either. It’s an unforgettable retreat, allowing you to escape not only the literal busyness of the outside world, but the busyness of life in general. A place where internal chatter disappears, leaving behind only the exotic sounds of the jungle.
ヴァイスロイ・バリを単に「ホテル」と呼ぶのはふさわしくなく、「リゾートホテル」と呼ぶのも適切ではありません。ヴァイスロイ・バリは、周りの喧騒からのみならず、日常生活の忙しさからも逃れられる素晴らしい場所です。あれこれと心に浮かぶ思いが消え去り、密林のエキゾチックな音だけが耳元に届く場所です。

And into another world
In culinary circles, 3 Michelin Stars means that a particular restaurant is “worth a special journey” just to visit; rather than being a stop on the way to a destination, the restaurant is the destination itself. It’s a shame that no such grading system exists for hotels, for Viceroy Bali would surely be included in that distinction.
飲⻝業界にはミシュランガイドがあり、3つ星を持つレストランは訪れるだけで旅に値するという事を示します。レストラン自体が目的地そのものであり、目的地へ行く途中に立ち寄る場所ではありません。残念ながら、ホテル業界には同じような格付けシステムはありませんが、もしあればヴァイスロイ・バリが傑出したホテルに含まれることは間違いないでしょう。
Our Deluxe Terrace Villa / 私たちが宿泊したデラックス テラスヴィラ
Intimately perched over a huge ravine within the central foothills of the Gianyar regency, Viceroy Bali is a collection of 40 villas – each painstakingly integrated into the natural surroundings. Offering total privacy, our spacious Deluxe Terrace Villa included a large infinity pool surrounded by lush tropical greenery. The pool had the option of being heated, meaning it was perfect even in the evenings. As I floated in the pool, Mrs IKIMASHO could be seen napping in the Bale Bengong – literally translated as a “daydream house”, a place where one can slip into a daydream amidst the stillness of the surroundings.
バリ島ギャニャール県中央部にある丘陵地帯の巨大な渓谷の上に佇むヴァイスロ イ・バリには40棟のヴィラがあります。各ヴィラは細部に至るまで周りの自然と非常に良く調和しています。完全なプライバシーを保ちつつ、広々としたデラック ス テラス ヴィラには生い茂る緑豊かな熱帯植物に囲まれたインフィニティ プール があります。プールはヒーター付きのため、夕方でもプールを使用することができ ました。私はプールで浮かびながら、妻が「バレ ベンゴン」と呼ばれるガゼボで 昼寝をしているのを見ることが出来ました。「バレ ベンゴン」とは、文字通りに訳すと「白昼夢の家」という意味で、静けさの中、白昼夢に紛れ込むような場所として利用されています。
Our own private pool villa
Mod-cons included a 30cm rain shower, Bowers & Wilkins speaker, and a huge TV – but the main point I want to press home about our villa was how pristine it was. The floors were sparkling. Everything was in its place. Sometimes, even in high-end luxury hotels, little scuffs have been left on the white walls by people rubbing their luggage against it. There was none of that at Viceroy Bali. It was simply immaculate.
最新設備としては、30cmのレインシャワーヘッド、イギリスブランドの「バワー ズ・アンド・ウイルキンス」のスピーカー、大型の壁掛けテレビ等たくさんありましたが、私が一番強調したいことはヴィラの美しさです。床はピカピカに輝かれて いて、全てが整然としていました。高級ホテルでも、荷物を白い壁に擦り付けた時 にできる擦り傷や跡が残っていることが良くあります。ヴァイスロイ・バリではそ のようなことは一切無く、完璧でした。
Breakfast as the mist rolls in / 霧が立ち込める中での朝⻝
With distant tree canopies gently swaying, we sat at our breakfast table in awe of the living painting before us. Viceroy Bali’s CasCades restaurant is designed without walls, allowing the rejuvenating air of the valley to travel through the space. Sitting behind automatic doors to keep things fresh, the breakfast buffet was as impressive as you might expect: a vast array of fresh tropical fruits, salads, fresh cuts and local staples. I’m not ashamed to admit that I loaded up on crispy bacon – one thing Tokyo simply can’t seem to get right.
風に揺れる木々を遠くに、目の前に広がる生きた絵画に目を見張りながら、私たちは朝ごはんを⻝べました。ヴァイスロイ・バリの「カスケード」レストランには壁がないため、渓谷から活力を呼び戻すような清々しい空気が流れて来ます。新鮮さを保つために自動ドアの後ろに用意された朝⻝ビュッフェは期待通り素晴らしいものでした。様々な新鮮なトロピカルフルーツ、健康的なサラダ、カットされたハムやチーズの盛り合せ、地元の定番料理など、豊富な品揃えが提供されていました。東京では何故かどうしても味わえないカリカリベーコンがあり、そのベーコンを満足いくまでご馳走になることができました。
Unwaveringly customer-focused / 揺るぎない顧客重視
Heartfelt, sincere and professional – the staff at Viceroy Bali made a lasting impression on us, their genuine smiles and friendliness enveloping us during our stay. Prior to arriving at the retreat I had eaten at a local warung and received a case of what locals call ‘Bali Belly’. The staff went out of their way to give me some medicine to settle my stomach – and even made me some fresh lomi lomi tea made from lime, honey and ginger. Despite only staying at the retreat for two nights, the staff always remembered our names and were caring, yet not intrusive.
心のこもった、誠実でプロフェショナルなヴァイスロイ・バリのスタッフは、私たちの滞在中、真心からの笑顔やおもてなしで応対してくれ、忘れられない印象を受けました。ヴァイスロイ・バリに到着する前に、地元のワルン(屋台)で⻝事をし、地元の人々が呼ぶ「バリ ベリー」(バリ腹:バリ島に訪れた旅行者がお腹を壊すこと)になり、お腹を壊してしまいました。親切にも、スタッフは胃を落ち着かせるためのお薬を準備してくれ、さらに、お腹を壊した時に効くロミロミ茶を作ってくださいました。これはライム、蜂蜜と生姜を使ったお茶で、香りも良くて優しい味がするお茶でした。2泊3日の短い滞在にも関わらず、スタッフ全員が私たちの名前を覚えてくれて、押し付けがましくない親切さと細やかな気遣いをしてくれました。
Dreaming when we can return / またいつか戻れる日まで
During check-out, we were genuinely hit with a sense of sadness. The staff, the view, the whole experience of just being there made it bittersweet to leave. Usually when we travel we are thinking of new places to go, but we are already talking about when we can go back to Viceroy Bali, perhaps for one of our milestone anniversaries. If you are considering staying at Viceroy Bali, please know that it is every bit as good as you read about.
チェックアウトする際、私たちは心悲しい気持ちでした。スタッフの方々、素晴らしいジャングルの景色、何をするでもなくただそこにいるだけで味わえた数々の経験。それらがそこを去る私たちにほろ苦い思いを与えたのでした。旅行している時はたいてい、次に行きたい新しい場所を考えてしまうのですが、ヴァイスロイ・バリを再び訪れる日を既に話しています。節目となる結婚記念日にでも戻れたらと考えています。もし、ヴァイスロイ・バリを訪れるのを検討されているのでしたら、是非行ってみてください。ウェブ上などで読む通り、間違いなく素晴らしくて思い出に残る場所です。
